“One of [the stereotypes] was that women are very emotional, very impulsive, depressive, not very rational,” she says. “That we would make the decision to take our own life faced with a situation that was difficult to resolve. And the partners, the men, often said that’s how it happened, and the investigation followed from there.”

The last domestic crash was in 2010, when a plane crashed in Yichun in Heilongjiang province, killing 42.
China’s airlines had recorded over 100 million continuous hours of safe flight as of February 19, according to Zhu Tao, an official with the Civil Aviation Administration.
